For this Highgate family, the ambition was never simply to build a larger house. They wanted a home that felt generous, uplifting and adaptable to the rhythms of everyday life, somewhere that could accommodate busy family routines, welcome guests and still offer moments of calm and privacy.

The existing property struggled to provide any of this. Its interior felt disconnected from the garden, natural light was limited, and the spaces lacked the flexibility that modern family life demands. Yet its position within the Highgate Conservation Area presented an opportunity: to create a home that sat comfortably within its setting while offering a very different experience inside.

The design was guided by a simple idea: organise the house around light and movement. At its heart, a three-storey atrium draws daylight deep into the plan, creating a structural connection between floors and making the journey through the house an experience in itself. Around this central space, rooms expand and contract, balancing openness with intimacy. Family areas connect naturally to the garden, courtyard and pool, while quieter spaces provide opportunities to retreat, work or relax.

Despite its scale, the house feels remarkably calm. Light reaches even the lower levels through the courtyard, views unfold gradually from one space to the next, and every part of the home feels connected to the landscape beyond. Behind a formal façade that respects its surroundings lies a home full of character, warmth and discovery -one that supports family life today while remaining flexible for the years ahead.

  • Trusting them was easy

“After 15 years of marriage we finally disagreed – I wanted a calming modern house but my husband wanted a contemporary house with adventure. Felix, Catherine and their team gave us both. Inspiring us with their attention to detail and sense of ownership for this project we felt emboldened in our pursuit for our dream home – trusting them was easy. A big thank you to Finkernagel Ross Architects.”
