When a Swedish hotelier began searching for a London base, the priority was not square footage but location. The home needed to feel spacious, calm and effortless, a place to retreat between travels while remaining connected to everything the city has to offer.

The property they found, a mews house within the Holland Park Conservation Area, offered an exceptional location but little of the generosity they were looking for. Like many London mews houses, its footprint was constrained, and every square metre needed to work harder. The challenge was not how to make the house bigger, but how to make it feel larger, lighter and more enjoyable to live in.

The breakthrough came from rethinking the house around efficiency rather than excess. Unnecessary circulation was removed, storage was integrated into the architecture and every space was designed around how the client would actually live. By extending both above and below, the house gained the accommodation it needed, but more importantly, it gained a sense of openness that belies its size.

Natural light became a constant companion throughout the home. New openings, larger, carefully positioned windows and a more considered layout draw daylight deep into the plan, creating an atmosphere that feels bright and welcoming from morning until evening.

Inside, the experience is one of quiet simplicity. A restrained palette of natural materials, timeless furniture and Scandinavian influences creates a sense of calm that contrasts with the energy of the city beyond the front door. The result is a home that feels both elegant and deeply practical: a London pied-à-terre designed not simply to accommodate life, but to make it feel easier, lighter and more enjoyable.
